[101.02] Verifying the Accuracy of the 3rd Interplanetary Network with the Bursting Pulsar GRO J1744-28

Of the several thousand bursts observed by BATSE from the bursting pulsar GRO J1744-28, over 500 have now been detected by the Ulysses gamma-ray burst experiment. This represents an increase of about one order of magnitude compared to our previous study. GRO J1744-28 has therefore been localized by Ulysses and BATSE using both network synthesis and conventional triangulation techniques. Since the source position is fairly well known from the X-ray counterpart, we have been able to verify the accuracy of both techniques. This verification applies to the timing accuracy of the Ulysses data in the real-time and triggered data modes, the cross-correlation technique used to compare the light curves of gamma-ray bursts from different spacecraft, and the method used to derive burst positions by triangulation. We compare the positions of the bursting pulsar obtained by network synthesis and triangulation and perform a statistical analysis of the location uncertainties. We show that these uncertainties are dominated by count rate statistics, and that no large, unidentified systematic errors exist.
