[68.15] Surface Brightness Profiles for 659 Spiral and Lenticular Galaxies

We present surface brightness profile decompositions for a large number of spiral and lenticular galaxies. For an initial sample of 659 galaxies, we find that the observed V brightness profiles of 620, or 94of a de Vaucouleurs law bulge and an inner-truncated exponential disk. We find no correlations between the quality of fit and either the morphological type or the inclination of the system. In particular, the adopted decompositions work equally well for barred and unbarred galaxies. About 25are best fit with an inner-truncated exponential, suggesting that such truncations are both real and relatively common. We compare our fitted profiles to those of other authors and interpret some differences. Finally, we re-address Freeman's 1970 suggestion that the disk central brightness parameter is substantially constant among spiral and lenticular galaxies.
