[8.05] Observations of Cyg X-2 with the CUBIC Experiment

The CUBIC X-ray instrument, launched aboard the Argentinian satellite SAC-B, began scientific observations in the 0.2 - 10 keV band in the beginning of December 1996. CUBIC has time resolution of 30 seconds and energy resolution ranging from 40 eV to 160 eV over its bandpass. With its modest area, it is ideally suited to CCD observations of bright X-ray sources. One of the first targets observed was the bright X-ray source Cyg X-2. Observations lasted several days so correlations of X-ray spectra with a 9.84-day orbital period can be carefully investigated. In this paper we present first results of these observations, including analysis of X-ray color-color and color-intensity diagrams, emission-lines, correlation of these parameters with an X-ray luminosity of this low-mass binary at different orbital phases. We present a comparison of our observations with data from other satellites, and apply our results to estimations of accretion disc structure and accretion flows in Cyg X-2.
