1. DISCOUNTED AIR TRAVEL TO IAU GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The AAS has entered into an agreement with Northwest Airlines to provide discounts for travel to the General Assembly to be held August 18-30 in Kyoto, Japan, from cities in the U.S. and Canada. Discounts can range from $50 to $200 depending on the amount of the ticket purchased. Northwest flies directly from a number of U.S. cities to both Tokyo and Osaka, and has government fares for this route from many U.S. cities.

To participate in this program the traveler requests a discount certificate from the AAS. This certificate is then presented to any Northwest Airlines office or any travel agent to obtain the discount off the best fare available. The certificates are valid for travel during the period 11 August through 6 September 1997, and they will provide the discount for each member of a party.

If you are interested in obtaining a certificate, please write the AAS Executive Office, or e-mail crane@aas.org.  We will mail or FAX the certificate to you promptly.

2. APJ ELECTRONIC SUBSCRIPTIONS TO BECOME EFFECTIVE 1 APRIL

Access control for the electronic Astrophysical Journal is planned to become effective on April 1. After that date readers will have two ways to access the electronic ApJ:

1. Use a machine at an institution which has signed up for the electronic license.

2. Use a password-activated personal subscription (available to AAS members only) which can be used from any machine in the Internet.

A form to add a personal subscription to the electronic ApJ ($80 for 1997) is available on the membership section of the AAS home page (http://www.aas.org). If a personal subscription is not for you, then  make sure your library has returned the electronic license form. If your library already subscribes to the paper ApJ, there is no additional cost for them to add the electronic access. Information on library subscriptions can be found at:

http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/ApJ/

5. INSTRUMENTATION LITERATURE IN THE ADS ABSTRACT SERVICE
Guenther Eichhorn

The ADS would like to make you aware of the fact that we have not only abstracts from the astronomical literature. A separate database with abstracts from the instrumentation and optical literature is available. This Instrumentation Database contains almost 500,000 abstracts. You can access this database from our abstract service page at:

http://adsabs.harvard.edu/ads_abstracts.html

This page also allows you access to our mirror site at the CDS in France. Since December we have mirrored the ADS abstract
databases at the CDS in Strasbourg, France. Negotiations for another mirror site in Japan are progressing.
