1. NASA RELEASES DRAFT AO FOR SOFIA SECOND GENERATION INSTRUMENTS FOR
COMMUNITY COMMENT

NASA has released a draft solicitation for community review and comment, the Draft Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) Second Generation Instruments Program Element Appendix (PEA) for the Stand Alone Missions of Opportunity Notice (SALMON) AO. The draft solicitation is available at http://nspires.nasaprs.com/.

The SOFIA observatory consists of a German-built 2.7-meter telescope mounted in a Boeing 747-SP aircraft supplied and modified by NASA. Flying at altitudes up to 45,000-feet, SOFIA observes from above more than 99 percent of Earth's atmospheric water vapor, thereby opening windows to the universe not available from the ground. Seven first-generation science instruments are under development by institutions in both the U.S. and Germany, including both imaging cameras and spectrographs. This draft solicitation is a call for science investigations that include the development, delivery, and use of second generation instruments for the SOFIA observatory. The comment period for the Draft SOFIA Second generation Instruments PEA ends on 11 February 2011.

All comments and questions should be directed to Paul Hertz, Ref.: SOFIA Instruments Draft PEA, Science Mission Directorate, NASA Headquarters, Washington, DC 20546-0001, E-mail: paul.hertz at nasa.gov.

2. SUBMILLIMETER ARRAY CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Deadline: 17 March 2011

The Submillimeter Array (SMA), is a radio interferometer located near the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, comprising of eght 6-m antennas operating at 230, 345, 420 and 690 GHz bands. The SMA is a collaboration between the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics. For the observing semester 2011 May 16 through 2011 November 15, the proposal deadline is 2011 March 17. For more information, please visit the SMA Observer Center web site at http://sma1.sma.hawaii.edu/.

Questions or comments regarding the Call for Proposals can be addressed to propose at sma.hawaii.edu

3. MONTAGE IMAGE MOSAIC SOFTWARE: NEW RELEASE, SCRIPTS AND BLOG

The Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC) announces the release of version 3.3 of Montage. This version, now available for download at http://montage.ipac.caltech.edu/docs/download2.html, includes expanded HDU support for multi-part image files and improved support for the Message Passing Interface (MPI). We recommend this version for all users.

Also posted are new C-shell scripts contributed by user Dr. Colin Aspin that automate the creation of three-color mosaics from DSS, SDSS and 2MASS data. Download the scripts from http://montage.ipac.caltech.edu/userscript1.html.

Finally, users may now stay informed about software updates, learn how Montage is used in scientific analysis and generating science product, and share images on the new Montage blog:
